The hotel opened in 2023, the first Six Senses in a European capital, and its arrival meant restoring a structure with genuine excavated history: during the renovation, workers uncovered a Roman-era well and stretches of ancient masonry in the basement, now left exposed and lit rather than filled back in. There are 96 rooms and suites across six floors. The interiors are by Patricia Urquiola, working with a base of travertine, walnut and terracotta rather than the marble-and-gilt default of Roman five-stars. The hotel is run under the Six Senses brand (part of IHG since 2019), with a general manager and a locally hired team who lean into the neighbourhood rather than sealing the building off from it. The ground floor centres on Bivium, the hotel's restaurant, whose name refers to the point where two roads cross, a nod to the crossroads location and to the kitchen's split identity between Roman trattoria staples and a lighter, more contemporary register; Fulvio Pierangelini, the chef long associated with Rome's La Pergola-adjacent fine dining scene, is the culinary director. The spa sits below ground around the excavated well, with a Roman-bath-inspired circuit of hot and cold pools, a biohacking-leaning treatment menu (Six Senses's house speciality, transplanted here with local adaptations), and a hammam. Upstairs, the rooftop bar and restaurant look out over the rooftops toward the Pantheon's dome and the hills beyond, open to non-guests for aperitivo, so it is often full of people who aren't staying at the hotel. Rooms favour muted, tactile materials over ornament, with deep soaking tubs and a restraint that reads as more Milanese than Roman baroque. What it feels like is a hotel that has done the work of reconciling wellness-brand systems with a genuinely old building, rather than parachuting a spa concept into a heritage shell and hoping the two get along; the exposed Roman well downstairs does real work here, giving the whole property a sense of standing on something rather than simply occupying it. It suits a traveller who wants the location of the historic centre, walkable to the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps, without the brocade-and-crystal formality that many Roman five-stars still default to, and who is willing to pay for a wellness programme that is more substantial than a single treatment room and a sauna. It also suits people travelling for a few days of proper recovery bookended by sightseeing, since the spa circuit rewards a slow morning. You should not come if you want a hotel that disappears into total privacy, since the ground floor restaurant and rooftop draw a steady stream of outside guests and the energy downstairs can run more scene-conscious than hushed. You should not come if Roman maximalism, frescoes, gilt mirrors, the full palazzo fantasy, is what you are after; Urquiola's restraint is the opposite of that. You should come for a wellness programme built into a building with real archaeological weight underneath it, for Bivium's kitchen, and for a location that puts the whole historic centre within walking distance without needing a hotel that performs the centre's history at you.
