THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
CoolRooms Atocha
CoolRooms Atocha keeps a statue of Hermes at its entrance, where carriages once rolled through into what is now a hotel, and the passage still runs under seven-meter ceilings to a secret garden with its own pool behind the palace facade in the Barrio de las Letras. The building started in 1852 as a private house, and the conversion has kept that bone structure while adding 35 rooms spread across four floors, an indoor pool alongside the outdoor one, a restaurant working from recipes that read like a grandmother's kitchen, a massage room and solarium, and a staff fluent in English, Spanish, German and French. What sets it apart is the pair of Coolsuites at the top of the house, each with a private rooftop terrace and an outdoor jacuzzi over the tiled roofs of central Madrid, a detail that turns a stopover into the reason for the trip. The house also claims some of the largest rooms in Madrid, and the Deluxe category comes with a Bang & Olufsen speaker, Molton Brown toiletries, a Nespresso machine and its own kettle rather than the usual travel-size sachet. This suits a couple who wants the Prado a short walk away and a hotel that still feels like someone's old house rather than a chain property, not someone chasing a resort with hundreds of rooms. Check-in starts at 3pm and check-out at noon, and self-parking costs a flat 30 euros for the whole stay in a city built for walking anyway. The garden below Hermes, quiet and walled off from the street outside, is what stays with you after checkout. A 1852 palace in Madrid's Barrio de las Letras, guarded by a statue of Hermes and built around a walled garden with its own pool. Thirty-five rooms, two rooftop Coolsuites with private jacuzzis, and a restaurant working from grandmother's recipes. This is a house with history intact, not a resort.
