THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Lodge Mallorca
The north of Mallorca, the flat plain of the Pla de Sant Jordi between the Tramuntana foothills and the Bay of Alcúdia, is agricultural country, the island's interior laid bare in a way that the more celebrated coastal landscapes are not. Almond orchards and lavender fields and centuries-old olive groves run to the foot of the mountains, the light in the morning doing something quite different here than it does near Palma or in the northwest. The towns of Pollença and Alcúdia are close by, the former a handsome inland market town with a Roman bridge and a Sunday market that draws the serious antiques crowd, the latter a medieval walled town above one of the finest sandy bays on the island. The beaches of Playa de Muro and Formentor are within easy reach. This is the part of Mallorca that guests who rent fincas have been coming to for years, and that most hotel stays overlook entirely. The Lodge sits on a 157-hectare private nature reserve in the UNESCO-protected Tramuntana foothills near Sa Pobla, a former working farm whose oldest structures date back five centuries and which has been converted with considerable care into a 24-suite adults-only retreat. The interiors are an accomplished version of what minimalist Mallorcan luxury looks like at its best, sun-baked terracotta, peach-toned stone, exposed beams, Egyptian cotton, and feather pillows, the palette evoking the land immediately outside rather than importing anything from elsewhere. Suites are scattered across the estate in various configurations, from rooms in the main farmhouse with almond grove views to standalone pool and garden suites in their own private pockets of the grounds, reached by foot, bicycle or buggy. Three pools sit in the estate, the main infinity pool on a terrace below the original farmhouse with views over the countryside, a second pool for the garden suite guests, and a private pool for those who book the corresponding suite. The restaurant, Singular, cooks over open fire using different types of wood, the menu built around Mallorcan produce from the orchards and fields surrounding the hotel, served in a room with floor-to-ceiling windows that dissolve the boundary between inside and out. On Wednesday evenings in high season, dinner moves to the lavender fields themselves. Yoga sessions are included, the spa uses Natura Bissé, and the concierge is genuinely useful about the lesser-known coves and hiking trails that most visitors to the island never find. The guests are those who want nature as the primary experience rather than the backdrop, who would choose 157 hectares of private reserve over a town-centre pool, and who find the combination of serious landscape, serious food, and genuine quiet more compelling than anything closer to the coast. It is not a hotel for people who want to be in the middle of things. It is very much a hotel for people who have already decided they don't. The short version: A 24-suite adults-only retreat on a 157-hectare private nature reserve in the UNESCO-protected Tramuntana foothills, near Pollença and the beaches of Alcúdia Bay. A 500-year-old farmhouse restored with Mallorcan restraint, three pools including an infinity pool over the estate, a fire-cooking restaurant in the lavender fields, and more hiking and cycling country than most guests manage to cover. Open March to October.
