THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
ESTIMAR Valencia 4 & one
At Calle del Pintor Sorolla 17, on the axis in Ciutat Vella that divides Valencia's commercial and financial quarter from its historic and cultural one, a nineteenth-century palace that later became a bank headquarters reopened in May 2024 as a sixty-five room hotel. The building kept its bones and lost its business, the marble counters and vault doors reframed rather than removed, a few minutes' walk from the Ayuntamiento, the Plaza del Patriarca and the Cathedral, directly above Colón metro station. Behind it is the Oltra family, hoteliers since 1977, when Guillermo Oltra ran a block of tourist apartments and a small grocery in Calpe before opening the Gran Hotel Sol y Mar there in 2007. His children took over the business after his death and rebranded it as Estimar Hotels, The Master Blend Hotel Group, under current CEO Juan Oltra, and this is their first urban property and their first step outside the Costa Blanca. The interiors, by Estudio Rosa Rosselló, work the former bank's materials rather than erase them, colour, wood and bronze set against what survives of the original counters and strongboxes. The restaurant, called Bankers, runs a Mediterranean menu rooted in Valencian "terreta" cooking with occasional fusion turns, and the rooftop, called The Coin, pours a cocktail list developed by Patxi Troitiño, Spain's national mixology champion, over what is one of the better sightlines onto the city's rooftops at sunset. There is a small spa, a gym, and coworking space downstairs, along with the more ordinary comforts of soundproofed rooms, rainfall showers and a pillow menu. It reads as a city hotel built for people who move through Valencia rather than retreat from it, close enough to the Silk Exchange and the Central Market to walk to both before lunch, close enough to the old financial district to remember what the building used to do for a living. The bank-vault framing could tip into gimmick, and in places the marketing language leans that way, but the rooms themselves are restrained rather than themed, and the location does more of the work than the concept does. It suits a couple or a solo traveller on a three or four night city break, a first stay in a group still finding its feet outside its home coast, more than it suits anyone chasing a grand historic interior or a beach view. You should not come if you want the kind of centuries-deep restoration story you'd find in a converted palace with the original owning family still on site, or if a bank-themed bar is the last thing you want after a day of meetings. You should come for a genuinely central address between the old town and the shopping district, a rooftop worth timing your evening around, and a family operator still working out what it wants an urban hotel to be, which for now means competence over cliché. The short version: A four-star, 65-room hotel in a former bank headquarters on Calle Pintor Sorolla, Ciutat Vella, opened 2024 by Valencia newcomers Estimar Hotels, with Rosa Rosselló interiors, a rooftop by Patxi Troitiño, and a location between the old town and the commercial centre.
