THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Parador de El Saler
Parador de El Saler sits eighteen kilometres outside Valencia, a distance that puts it nearer open coast than cathedral, and it shows: several of its room categories look out to ocean rather than garden, and two pools, one indoor, one outdoor, sit alongside a spa with sauna, steam bath and massage room. Built in 1966 and run across just two floors and 65 rooms, it belongs to the Paradores de Turismo chain, which is the detail separating it from the city's other five-star hotels. Inside, there's a library for guests who'd rather read than scroll, a tour desk for trips to the Oceanografic Aquarium, the Prince Felipe Museum of Sciences and the City of Arts and Sciences nearby, and a mandatory gala dinner policy some travellers will want to ask about before booking. Staff switch between English, Spanish and French without fuss, and the elevator access, wheelchair-friendly rooms and playrooms for children suggest a property used to a mixed crowd of business travellers, families and couples after a coastal stay rather than a city-break itinerary. Anyone chasing rooftop bars and walkable nightlife within Valencia proper should look elsewhere; the 18 km distance that gives the ocean-view rooms their view means it's not a stroll into the centre. What it offers instead, and what its city-centre five-star competitors mostly don't, is space: two floors, an outdoor terrace in the standard double room, and enough pool capacity that nobody's queuing for a sunbed. It's a hotel built for staying put, not for checking off a list. Eighteen kilometres from central Valencia, this Parador trades city-break convenience for indoor and outdoor pools, ocean-view rooms and a spa, part of Spain's Paradores de Turismo chain since 1966. Good for a coastal stay, not a nightlife base.
