THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Canfranc Estacion, a Royal Hideaway Hotel
This place has a real story to tell, so bear with me for the length of the description. The Canfranc International Railway Station was inaugurated on 18 July 1928 in the Aragonese Pyrenees, ten kilometres from the French border, in a ceremony attended by King Alfonso XIII of Spain and the President of the French Republic. At 241 metres long with 365 windows and 156 doors, it was the second largest railway station in Europe at the time of its completion and was known almost immediately as the Titanic of the Mountains. The ambition behind it was straightforward: a grand shared terminal that would unite the French and Spanish rail networks across the Pyrenees, opening a third crossing point between the two countries and announcing both nations' modernity to the world. What followed was one of the more dramatic building histories in Europe. A fire damaged the lobby within three years of opening. The Wall Street crash derailed the economic promise of the line. During the Spanish Civil War, Franco sealed the tunnels on the Spanish side. During the Second World War, Canfranc became what historians have called the Casablanca of the Pyrenees, a crossing point for Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi-occupied France, among them the painters Marc Chagall and Max Ernst, as well as a conduit for Nazi gold moving in the other direction and a hub for Allied espionage operations. In 1970, a freight train derailment demolished a bridge on the French side of the line. France decided not to rebuild it. The international service closed. The population of the village dropped sharply. The station, too vast and too expensive to maintain and too extraordinary to demolish, was fenced off and left to the elements for fifty years, becoming one of the most atmospheric abandoned buildings in Spain. The Government of Aragon acquired it in 2013 and partnered with the Barceló Hotel Group to convert it. The hotel opened in 2022, named one of the best openings in the world by the Financial Times. The restoration kept the Beaux-Arts facade entirely intact, the 365 windows restored to look out over the snow-capped Pyrenees valley as they always did. Inside, the Art Deco aesthetic of the 1920s is the organising principle throughout, brass and velvet and polished parquet, rooms designed in a chromatic range that evokes the golden age of train travel, Aragonese craft and textile traditions woven throughout. There are 104 rooms and suites, all with mountain views. The Michelin-starred restaurant Canfranc Express, led by chef Eduardo Salanova, serves Aragonese haute cuisine in a space that honours the building's original grandeur. The 1928 restaurant occupies a restored train carriage. The spa has a heated pool. Candanchú and Astún ski resorts are nine kilometres away. The Camino de Santiago passes through Canfranc on its Aragonese route. Guided historical tours of the station run regularly and are worth doing. The guests tend to be well-travelled Europeans who have done the obvious luxury destinations and are now drawn to something with genuine historical weight, architecture lovers, serious skiers using it as a base for Candanchú and Astún, and the kind of couple who chooses a long weekend in the Aragonese Pyrenees over a city break specifically because they want mountains and silence alongside the hotel experience. It is not a scene. The dining room has energy, the history gives the place a particular gravity, and the setting in the valley with the snow-capped peaks above it does the rest. People who come here tend to come back, often with friends, because it is the kind of place that is genuinely difficult to explain until someone has seen it. The short version: The former Canfranc International Railway Station, the second largest in Europe at its 1928 inauguration, converted after fifty years of abandonment into a 104-room five-star hotel in the Aragonese Pyrenees. Beaux-Arts facade intact, Art Deco interiors throughout, a Michelin-starred restaurant, a restored train carriage dining room, ski resorts nine kilometres away, and one of the most dramatic building histories in Europe. Named one of the best hotel openings in the world by the Financial Times. A genuinely irreplaceable address.
