THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Gran Hotel Ingles

Madrid has no shortage of grand hotels, but Gran Hotel Inglés has something the others cannot manufacture: genuine seniority. It opened in 1886 as the city's first luxury hotel, predating the London Ritz by two decades, and counted European royalty and Spain's literary establishment among its regulars before the Civil War interrupted everything. After years of closure it was restored completely by New York's Rockwell Group and reopened in 2018, its Art Deco bones intact, its soul carefully returned. It sits on Calle de Echegaray, a narrow brick-paved street in the Barrio de las Letras, the quarter that once housed Cervantes and Lope de Vega, and which remains one of the most pleasurable parts of the city to simply walk around in. The Rockwell Group's renovation worked in service of the original rather than against it. The lobby bar arrives as a genuinely striking room, its circular marble counter surrounded by leather stools and a dramatically lit spirits shelf suspended from the ceiling like a held note, while Chesterfield sofas and velvet armchairs give the space enough informality that it functions as a neighborhood spot as much as a hotel amenity. The 48 rooms continue the Art Deco register: parquet floors, a palette of white, bronze and silver, tufted velvet headboards, vintage valet stands, and in upgraded rooms, freestanding clawfoot baths. Rooms facing the inner courtyard are the quietest, though those with small balconies onto the street have an obvious appeal. The upper suite with its slanted ceilings and Jacuzzi terrace occupies a different register altogether, and the penthouse offers a formal dining room and a fully stocked bar, which is either exactly what you need or completely unnecessary, depending on who you are. The restaurant Casa Lobo serves forward-thinking Iberian cooking, with the menu maintaining an affectionate connection to the dishes that would have been served here over a century ago, a continuity that feels earned rather than contrived. The cocktail bar has been recognized as having the best cocktail bar menu in Madrid, and the hotel runs Swing and Rock & Roll Nights on Friday and Saturday evenings for those who want to stay rather than venture out, though Barrio de las Letras makes going out very easy. The Prado is a fifteen-minute walk, Retiro Park slightly more, and the density of good restaurants and bars immediately outside the door means the neighborhood does a great deal of the work for you. Gran Hotel Inglés earned a place on Condé Nast Traveller's Gold List in 2025, and is a member of Leading Hotels of the World. It is, in the most considered sense, a hotel that knows exactly what it is, which in Madrid's increasingly competitive luxury market is not nothing. The short version: Madrid's oldest luxury hotel, dating to 1886 and fully restored by the Rockwell Group, sits on a cobbled street in Barrio de las Letras with 48 Art Deco rooms, a celebrated cocktail bar, clawfoot tubs in upgraded rooms, and Iberian cooking at Casa Lobo. A fifteen-minute walk from the Prado, and surrounded by some of the best eating and drinking streets in the city.
