THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
H10 Casa Mimosa
H10 Casa Mimosa occupies a listed nineteenth-century building on Carrer de Pau Claris, number 179, in the Eixample Dreta, sharing its city block with Antoni Gaudí's Casa Milà, close enough that several rooms and the rooftop terrace look straight onto its chimneys. The house was built in the closing years of the nineteenth century as a private residence, reputedly for the Counts of Godó, and stood through the neighbourhood's transformation into the belle époque grandeur of the Passeig de Gràcia one block away, before H10 Hotels took on its restoration and opened the property as a 48 room hotel in 2017. The renovation was led by Tarruella Trenchs Studio, the Barcelona firm founded by Sandra Tarruella and Ricard Trenchs, with Olga Pajares as project leader, working from a photographic survey of the building that Emilio Lecuona made before construction began. Public rooms keep the original coffered ceilings, marquetry flooring and stone base of the entrance hall, paired with reception counters cut from matte and polished brass in straight, angled planes. The central staircase retains its original ironwork, lamps and lift, and Lecuona's black and white photographs of the building's earlier incarnation run through the corridors and the double height lounge. Guest rooms are dressed in neutral, natural tones with walnut and oak furniture, brass fittings and lighting from Marset, Metalarte, Parachilna, Santa & Cole, Oluce and Artemide, though the Suite Condal alone keeps its original coffered ceiling intact. Downstairs, the former coach house and stables have become Las Cotxeras, a high ceilinged meeting room with its original wooden beams and ceramic vaults, opening onto the El Til·ler garden, where a century old palm tree and the mimosa trees that gave the hotel its name shade a raised pool and Kettal outdoor furniture. El Til·ler restaurant runs from breakfast through dinner off that garden, and a second pool is set into the rooftop terrace, El Cel de Gaudí, facing La Pedrera directly. Staying here feels closer to borrowing a well kept Eixample apartment than checking into a forty eight room hotel, an impression the scale reinforces: there is no grand lobby to cross, just a run of interconnected rooms that move from street to garden to roof without much sense of transition. The Gaudí adjacency does real work, La Pedrera's chimney pots are visible from the terrace and several guest rooms, and the hotel leans into that fact without turning the building into a viewing platform for it. It suits travellers who want to walk to Casa Batlló, Casa Milà and the shops of Passeig de Gràcia without paying Passeig de Gràcia prices, and who would prefer a garden with a century old palm to a hotel pool bar. You should not come for spectacle rooms or a lobby scene, the public spaces are handsome but modest, and with 48 rooms there is no spa, no second restaurant, and none of the operatic scale some Barcelona five stars go in for. You should come for the location, for a restored Eixample building handled with real restraint, not showroom polish, and for the particular pleasure of drinking coffee under a mimosa tree with Gaudí's chimneys visible over the wall. The short version: A 48 room boutique hotel in a restored nineteenth century Eixample building, sharing its block with Gaudí's La Pedrera, with a walled garden, two pools and interiors by Tarruella Trenchs Studio.
