THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Coco Hotel
Vesterbro is the neighbourhood that Copenhageners tend to claim as the city's most genuinely lived-in. It runs west from the Central Station along Vesterbrogade, a long commercial boulevard that transitions from the tourist-facing businesses near the station into a dense grid of independent restaurants, natural wine bars, coffee roasters, vintage shops and the kind of neighbourhood bakeries that have queues before they open. It was for most of the 20th century the city's working-class and red-light district, its Istedgade the more complicated end of things, and it retains that particularity: Vesterbro is not polished in the way that Frederiksberg or Østerbro are polished. It is interesting in a way that requires knowing where to look, and the people who live there tend to prefer it precisely for that. Coco Hotel is the hospitality arm of Copenhagen Food Collective, known locally as Cofoco, a group of 19 independently conceived restaurants across the city united by a commitment to seasonal produce, sustainability and accessible pricing. The restaurants, ranging from Delphine next door to Les Trois Cochons, a French bistro a short walk away, and Jah Izakaya & Sake Bar, have been part of the Copenhagen food landscape for years and are the kind of places that locals actually eat at rather than places created for visitors. The hotel was opened in 2020 on Vesterbrogade, powered by the same solar farm in Jutland that supplies the restaurant group, making it carbon-negative, Green Key certified and entirely plastic-free. The exterior, with its blue-and-white striped awnings, has a deliberate Parisian quality that sits unexpectedly well against the Copenhagen streetscape. Inside, the 89 rooms balance hygge warmth with Scandinavian restraint, individually furnished, most facing the quiet green courtyard at the centre of the building. Rooms are compact by any measure, bathrooms more so, and the hotel is honest about being a place to sleep well and head out rather than a destination in itself. There is no spa, no pool, no room service to speak of. The Coco Café on the ground floor transitions from Nordic breakfast and organic coffee in the morning to a natural wine bar with local DJs on Friday and Saturday evenings, which is the most the on-site offer stretches to, and it is enough. The real reason to stay here, beyond the neighbourhood and the design, is the Cofoco connection. Hotel guests receive 15% off at any of the 19 restaurants and priority access to tables that are often booked weeks in advance by the general public, which in a city where the best dinner reservations are genuinely competitive is a more valuable guest benefit than most hotels can offer. The concierge can get you a table at a Cofoco restaurant even at short notice in ways that the restaurant's own reservation system cannot. For a food-focused Copenhagen visit, this is a meaningful operational advantage. The guests are younger and more food-driven than the typical luxury hotel crowd, professionals in their late twenties and thirties who came to Copenhagen specifically for the restaurant scene and want a neighbourhood address rather than a central one. They will spend very little time in the room and a great deal of time eating, which is exactly what the hotel is designed for. The short version: An 89-room boutique hotel in Vesterbro, opened in 2020 by Copenhagen Food Collective, the group behind 19 of the city's most consistently good restaurants. Compact rooms, no spa, no pool, a café that becomes a natural wine bar in the evenings. What it offers instead: a 15% discount with priority reservations across the Cofoco restaurant network, carbon-negative credentials, and one of the best neighbourhood addresses in Copenhagen. For those who came for the food and plan to spend most of their time out.
