THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
COMO Parrot Cay Resort
Reached by a fifty-minute transfer from Providenciales, a fifteen-minute drive followed by a scenic boat ride across the Caicos Banks, COMO Parrot Cay occupies its own 1,000-acre island in the Turks and Caicos archipelago, four miles of white sand facing the North Caicos Channel and no airstrip to disturb the quiet. The cay has a longer history as a retreat than the hotel does: an Austrian count, Ferdinand Czernin, first used it as an escape from New York in the mid-twentieth century, and development followed through the 1960s and 1970s before Christina Ong, the Singapore-based owner of COMO Hotels and Resorts, opened the current property in 1998, working with the London designer Keith Hobbs on the architecture and interiors. The resort now comprises around sixty rooms, suites, beach houses and villas, along with a scattering of larger private residences at the island's far end, some of them owned outright by the families who return each winter. Hobbs's design keeps to teak flooring, white cotton and linen, and Indonesian four-poster beds, colonial in outline but stripped of clutter, the kind of restraint that photographs better than it describes. Villas add private heated infinity pools, outdoor showers and full kitchens, with COMO butler service standard from the two-bedroom category up. Food runs across two restaurants: Lotus, doing Caribbean plates by day and Southeast Asian cuisine by night, and Terrace, more Mediterranean and Italian-leaning, with views back over the pool and ocean. The COMO Shambhala Spa sits apart on a low rise overlooking the wetlands and channel, nine treatment rooms given over to Indonesian and Thai massage, yoga, and the brand's own holistic programming, which has been part of COMO's identity since the group's earliest days in Bali. What you notice, once the boat has gone, is how little there is to notice: no beach bars playing music, no crowd to perform for, just sand, mangroves, and staff who have generally worked here long enough to remember your name from the previous stay. This is not a hotel built for spectacle, and the entry-level garden rooms, set back along breezeways near the lobby, make that plainer than the villas do. The appeal has always leaned toward people who want privacy without ostentation, the sort of guest list that has included Bruce Willis, Demi Moore and Donna Karan over the years without the resort ever needing to say so; discretion here is structural rather than promised. You should not come if you want nightlife, a full activity roster, or interiors with more personality than the beach outside them, some of the public rooms lean closer to bland than considered. You should come for the scale of the privacy, the length of the beach, and a level of one-to-one butler service that most resorts reserve for a handful of top suites rather than extending down through the villa categories. The short version: A 1,000-acre private island resort in the Turks and Caicos, opened in 1998 by Christina Ong with interiors by Keith Hobbs, around sixty rooms and villas, COMO Shambhala Spa, four miles of beach, built for seclusion over spectacle.
