THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hacienda San Rafael
Halfway between Seville and Jerez de la Frontera, off Carretera Nacional IV, an eighteenth-century olive estate spent ten years being pulled back from neglect after the family that had owned it for three generations decided in 1989 to save it rather than let it fall further. Hacienda San Rafael kept the result deliberately small, fourteen rooms in total across six hectares of garden, and no two look alike: the three casita suites, decorated by Kuky Mora-Figueroa, mix Burmese sideboards, Rajasthani coffee tables and hand-carved marble Mughal lamp niches, each with a private pool and a thatched choza where breakfast and lunch are served poolside. Deluxe doubles sit around a bougainvillea-filled courtyard with original wooden beams and duplex layouts. This suits someone happy to let the hotel arrange a horse ride among its schooled stable, a hike into the Sierra de Grazalema, or a sherry-bodega visit near Jerez, rather than someone wanting a walkable city-centre base with a fixed programme. The grounds run to an indoor and an outdoor pool, a spa with massage and yoga, a library, tennis, billiards, bike rental and a restaurant, bar and cafe, with staff speaking English, Spanish, German and French, wheelchair access, a doctor on call, babysitting and pets allowed. Check-in is from 2pm, check-out by noon, and cash payments are capped at 1000 euros under Spanish regulation. What no comparable Andalusian retreat quite matches is the room-by-room collecting, Indonesian lacquer and Zimbabwean headboards gathered under one roof over decades rather than sourced for a single refit. Mornings here move at the pace of the garden, not the itinerary. A restored eighteenth-century olive estate halfway between Seville and Jerez, its fourteen rooms filled with antiques from Burma, India and Zimbabwe rather than a single decorating scheme. Better suited to travellers wanting horse rides and sherry-bodega visits arranged for them than a walkable city-centre base.

The Hacienda keeps thirty schooled horses ready for guests to explore the surrounding countryside of olive groves, wheat fields, sunflowers and orange trees. Rides can be extended into full-day excursions, carriage rides on private estates, visits to stud farms or horse shows at the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art in nearby Jerez.
