THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Liman Hotel Gumusluk
Gümüşlük is the part of the Bodrum peninsula that the rest of the peninsula has, so far, failed to ruin, a fishing village of some 4,500 people on the far western tip of the Muğla coast, built directly on top of the sunken ruins of ancient Myndos, a Dorian city founded in the fourth century BC and besieged, unsuccessfully, by Alexander the Great in 334 BC. The hillsides surrounding the bay were placed under archaeological protection in 1975, which has kept the developers at bay and left Gümüşlük in something close to its mid-century form, stone houses and rush-covered harbourside restaurants and not much else. Liman, meaning harbour, is a ten-room adult-only boutique hotel positioned above this bay, close enough to the waterfront to have sea views from most rooms and far enough up the hillside to feel removed from the evening crowds. It is owned and run by Yasemin and Özcan, a couple whose presence throughout the property is constant and whose attentiveness, by consistent account from guests, tips well past professionalism into something closer to the hospitality of people who are genuinely glad you came. The rooms are clean, modern, and composed with a light hand, white walls and sea-facing balconies doing most of the work. The hotel has a spa with a hot tub and a small wellness offer, and the Gümüş Terrace, the rooftop café and restaurant that functions as the social heart of the place, serves a Turkish village breakfast each morning of local produce, warm dishes, and fresh fruit, and moves into dinner later in the day, with a Turkish and Aegean menu, wood-fired pizza, and a signature spicy gin cocktail that appears in enough guest accounts to be considered a fixed point of the stay. There is a library. The breakfast, by repeated guest consensus, is exceptional. What the hotel is, more than anything, is a quiet place owned by people who care about it, in a village that has resisted the particular kind of ruin that afflicts most of the Aegean coast in summer. Gümüşlük draws Turkish artists, writers, and musicians, hosts the Gümüşlük International Classical Music Festival each July and August in the ancient stone quarries above the bay, and has a seafront dining culture, fresh fish and meze and rakı at harbourside tables, that is among the best on the peninsula. Arriving at Liman involves steps, of which there are several and which are steep, but the trade-off is the elevation and the view, and most guests find this acceptable within minutes of arrival. You should not come if you are travelling with children (the hotel does not accept them), if you need flat access, or if your idea of the Aegean involves poolside service, a beach club, and a full spa menu. The nearest airport at Milas-Bodrum is fifty-five minutes by car. You should come if you want to spend a week eating fish at harbour tables, walking out to Rabbit Island along a sunken Hellenistic causeway at low tide, and sleeping somewhere that has been thought about by the people who run it rather than assembled from a hotel procurement catalogue. The scale enforces a quality of attention that larger properties cannot replicate. The short version: A ten-room adult-only boutique hotel above the harbour of ancient Myndos on the western tip of the Bodrum peninsula, owned by Yasemin and Özcan, with a rooftop terrace breakfast that outperforms its category and a village below it that has been protected from development since 1975.
