THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Il Borro Relais & Chateaux Hotel

The road into Il Borro climbs through six hundred hectares of Tuscan hillside before it reaches the borgo itself, a fortified hamlet first recorded in the tenth century, held for generations by the Alberti family and later the Bourbon del Monte, before Ferruccio Ferragamo, son of the shoemaker Salvatore, bought the estate in 1993 and began a restoration that took the better part of a decade. The village, a scatter of stone houses around a clock tower and a small parish church, now holds forty seven rooms and suites, supplemented by nine private villas and farmhouses, the poderi, set apart across the vineyards and olive groves. Ferruccio's daughter Vittoria, a documentary filmmaker turned custodian of the estate, oversees the place today, and the family's imprint, part fashion dynasty, part working farm, is visible in equal measure, from the leather workshop to the biodynamic vineyard rows. Inside, the rooms keep their original beams and terracotta floors, furnished with a mix of family antiques and contemporary Italian pieces rather than anything imported for effect, and Osteria del Borro, the estate's Michelin-recommended restaurant, works almost entirely from what the farm produces, the vegetables from the kitchen garden, the Chianina beef from the estate's own herd, the olive oil pressed on site. The wine programme runs on Il Borro's own labels, the flagship Il Borro red, Polissena, and Petruna, all made from grapes grown on the property under winemaker Vittorio Fiore's early guidance and now managed by the estate's own team. There is a spa built into a former stable block, an equestrian centre with its own stud, and a pool set into the hillside with a view down the Valdarno that the staff know better than to point out twice. What Il Borro offers is proximity to a working landscape rather than a performance of one, guests can watch the harvest, ride out with the estate's horses, or simply sit with the vines below them, and the pace of a stay here follows the farm's rhythm more than a concierge's schedule. It suits people who want Tuscany without the theatre of it, who would rather taste an estate wine at the source than read about it in a hotel folder, and who don't mind a twenty minute drive from Florence to get there. You should not come if you want walkable old town streets or a hotel that feels urban in any way, Il Borro is rural by design, and the nearest proper town, San Giovanni Valdarno, is a drive away. You should come for the estate itself, for wine made a hundred metres from where you're sleeping, and for a family that has kept the place a farm first and a hotel second. The short version: A tenth century borgo in the Valdarno, forty seven rooms and nine private villas on a six hundred hectare working estate, owned by the Ferragamo family since 1993, built around its own wine, olive oil, and Chianina beef.
