THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Le Jardin Malanga Hotel
Christine and Mikael still meet guests at the door of Le Jardin Malanga, a 1927 colonial house in Trois-Rivières that has been restored to its original design and set among orange, lemon and grapefruit trees at the foot of La Madeleine, an extinct volcano on Guadeloupe's Basse-Terre coast. Three wooden cottages sit near the main house, each carrying the same colonial detailing, and from their terraces and the pool deck the view runs straight out to the Saintes Archipelago, a combination of volcano and island view that sets the property apart on this coast. Breakfast is served on that same terrace between 7:30 and 9:30, tapas run through weekday lunches, and dinner, when the table d'hôtes is open, is a single fixed menu built daily around what chef Emilien finds at the local markets, a creole and French mix that changes with the season and pauses on Wednesday evenings. Rooms and cottages come with air conditioning, Lavazza machines, safes and free Wi-Fi, and the grounds add a library, a garden, a pool, beach facilities, massage and staff who work across several languages. Children are accepted only from age eight, which says plainly who the house suits: couples and solo travellers wanting quiet and a genuine sense of place rather than a family stopover for younger children. The volcano at its back and the archipelago in front give it a setting that photographs undersell. What stays with you is the stillness at breakfast, sea and islands laid out below the terrace before the day has properly started. A restored 1927 colonial house and three wooden cottages at the foot of an extinct volcano, with breakfast served facing the Saintes Archipelago and dinner built nightly around market produce. Children are welcome only from age eight, so this suits couples and solo travellers over family holidays with young kids.

THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Your taste already has an address

Reservation-only dinners are prepared by chef Emilien as a single set menu of starter, main and dessert, blending Creole and French cooking with local market produce that changes with the seasons. Served nightly between 7:00 and 7:30 pm except Wednesdays, the table d'hôtes turns each evening into a small, curated tasting experience.
