THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Stella D'italia
On Via Tornabuoni, behind the facade Giorgio Vasari drew up in the 16th century, breakfast runs 7:30 to 10:30 in a frescoed lounge, Tuscan sweet and savory dishes under the painted ceiling. Stella d'Italia occupies the top three floors of this old palazzo, and its 24 rooms are cut into every shape the building allows: some face inward onto quiet courtyards, some carry a private terrace over the rooftops, and a handful look straight down Via Tornabuoni itself, toward the fashion boutiques and noble palaces that line it. Every room carries a kettle and espresso machine, an HD TV, and Lorenzo Villoresi bath products, a specific choice most hotels don't bother making. This suits someone who wants to walk to the Uffizi and the Duomo in under ten minutes, and doesn't mind a staircase to reach reception or her room; there's a lift to the upper floors, but internal stairs and steps between rooms remain, so guests with mobility concerns should look elsewhere. Reception runs from 7:30am to 11pm, with a night porter on call after that for emergencies; anyone arriving past 9pm needs to have phoned ahead for check-in instructions. Concierge and tour assistance handle logistics, and a restaurant covers dinner without leaving the building. Pets stay home. A cleaning tax is charged separately at the hotel, not folded into the room rate. The hotel takes its name from the Romans' word for the Italian peninsula, star of the west, and the local saying that follows it: segui la tua stella, follow your own star. Whether that lands as poetry or marketing copy is up to the guest standing in the frescoed lounge at 8am, coffee in hand, deciding. A 16th-century Vasari palazzo on Via Tornabuoni, 24 rooms stocked with Lorenzo Villoresi bath products and views over courtyards, terraces, or the street itself. Reception closes at 11pm and stairs run throughout, so it suits confident travelers more than those needing full accessibility or a 24-hour desk.
