THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Henry Jones Art Hotel
The Henry Jones Art Hotel sits inside a row of 1820s waterfront warehouses on Hobart's Old Wharf, where Sir Henry Jones once ran his IXL jam factory and the building's brick and timber bones still show through. What Federal Group did with the site was turn it into Australia's first dedicated art hotel, hanging more than 400 original works by Tasmanian artists through the corridors, the guest lounge, the Packing Room Gallery, even the 56 rooms spread across three floors, so a walk to your room becomes a walk past paintings, prints and sculpture you won't find replicated at any other Hobart property. Refurbished in 2018, rooms keep things straightforward: king-size beds, air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and bathrooms in stainless steel, glass and sandstone, some with a free-standing spa bath. Below, the IXL Long Bar pours a drink with a view toward Victoria Dock and Mount Wellington, and Landscape Restaurant and Grill, a Chef Hat winner in 2022, handles the serious eating. Salamanca Place and the Hobart CBD are a two-minute walk. This suits travelers who want their hotel to double as a cultural stop, the kind who'd rather browse a Packing Room Gallery before breakfast than lie by a pool the hotel doesn't have. It suits less anyone chasing resort scale or a blank, art-free room to disappear into. There's a fitness room and a small business center, and staff run a free art tour most afternoons for guests who want the stories behind what's on the walls. Extra beds run 55 AUD a night, and pets aren't allowed. Stay long enough and the jam factory stops feeling like a gimmick and starts feeling like the point. A former 1820s jam factory on Hobart's waterfront, now Australia's first dedicated art hotel with 400-plus works on its walls. Fifty-six rooms, an IXL Long Bar over Victoria Dock, and a Chef Hat restaurant downstairs, built for travelers who want culture with their stay, not resort sprawl.
