THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Relais De La Poste
Walk out through the garden at Relais de la Poste and you're standing in a working vineyard, seventeen acres of it, with pine forest and Landes sand dune country pressing in from every side. The estate has belonged to the Coussau family since 1850, when their ancestors ran it as a grocery and inn on the pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela; it became a hotel-restaurant in 1952, and the kitchen has held a Michelin star since 1971, cooked by three generations of the same family. That continuity is the one thing peers along this stretch of southwest France don't have: a single family's restaurant, still Michelin-starred more than fifty years on, attached to sixteen rooms and suites rather than the other way round. Days settle into a rhythm of spa, sauna and steam room, a seasonal outdoor pool running June through September, and long tables at either the gastronomic restaurant or the more relaxed Auberge Côté Quillier next door. Rooms carry bathrobes, minibars and their own bathtubs; family rooms and a wheelchair-accessible layout are available, and pets are welcome for a fee. None of this suits anyone chasing beachfront immediacy or city nightlife, and with sixteen rooms it isn't built for groups wanting scale. It suits people who plan a trip around one specific meal and are happy to spend the rest of the day walking vineyard rows or the banks of the nearby Huchet stream. Breakfast costs extra for a house this serious about food. Fifty years of a Michelin star under one family's watch is not something a renovation buys. A sixteen-room estate in the Landes pine forest, run by the same family since 1850 and Michelin-starred since 1971. Spa, sauna, seasonal pool and a working vineyard fill the days between meals. It suits diners planning a trip around one restaurant, not anyone wanting beach or nightlife.
