THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
UMI Hotel
At the bar by reception, glasses catch the last light off Eyjafjallajökull while guests swap notes on the day's waterfalls; this is UMI Hotel, a single-floor, 28-room property built into the South Iceland countryside near Eyvindarholar, about 150 km from Reykjavik. The design is deliberately restrained: Icelandic autumn tones, textures pulled from the local landscape, rooms with mountain or sea views, bathrobes and heating against the chill, and a hush that comes from having only 28 rooms under one roof. Its restaurant runs Nordic and Icelandic cooking with a Japanese edge, built around Icelandic lamb and fresh regional ingredients, open evenings only, and paired with a breakfast buffet included in every rate. Where UMI separates itself from the region's guesthouses is the wellness layer: a public sauna, a private sauna bookable by the hour, massage treatments, and a yoga room open around the clock, all rare additions for a property this size in this part of the country, alongside access to a private beach. Outside, hiking, fishing, horse riding and bike rental sit within reach, with Skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss and the black sand coastline all drivable in an afternoon. It suits travelers who want a fixed, comfortable base for exploring the south coast and don't mind that the nearest town is 1 km away and the nearest city two hours off. It will frustrate anyone chasing nightlife, multiple restaurants or a hotel with more than one floor; the pull here is quiet, and the volcano outside the window does most of the talking. A single-floor, 28-room hotel near Eyjafjallajökull volcano in South Iceland, built around a Nordic-Japanese restaurant, sauna and yoga room, and rare private beach access. It suits travelers wanting a quiet fixed base for the south coast, not those chasing nightlife or a full-size hotel.

Your taste already has an address

Opened in 2017, Umi Hotel was conceived and built by the Sólonsson-Hjaltadóttir family, who wanted others to share the tranquility of the surrounding countryside. Its interior and lighting were designed by Sandra Dís Sigurðardóttir, daughter of the founders, using materials and colors inspired by Icelandic autumn and landscape textures. Alfa Framtak acquired the hotel in December 2023.
