At AdAstra Suites, the King Balcony rooms open straight onto a 270-square-metre wraparound terrace looking over the Torrigiani Garden, the largest private garden in Europe, with its statues and neo-gothic tower visible past the trees below. The bed and breakfast occupies the first and second floor of a former private mansion on Via del Campuccio, in Oltrarno, the artisan quarter south of the Arno, a 15-minute walk from Ponte Vecchio and the Pitti Palace. Architect Francesco Maestrelli and designers Matteo and Marco Perduca gave each of the 14 rooms its own look: mid-century Italian furniture, hand-picked art, original molding, and a freestanding bathtub set in the bedroom itself with a separate shower through the door. A few rooms step directly onto the terrace, two sit inside the garden, others face the quiet street below. Breakfast is served each morning between 7:30 and 10:30, and staff work in English, Italian and French. There is no parking on site and no pets allowed, so this is not the stop for a road trip with the dog in the back seat. It suits someone who wants Florence without the crowd outside the window, who will give up a pool and a gym for a private terrace and a garden view that nothing else in the centre matches. Rooms differ enough in size, bedding and outlook that it is worth checking which one is booked before arrival. Check-in runs from 2pm, check-out by 11am, and a cleaning tax is settled locally rather than folded into the room rate.
