THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The James Suite Hotel Firenze 1564
Step through the off-center portal on Via di Mezzo and the entrance sets the tone: walls washed in sky and moss, plants climbing toward barrel vaults that have stood since 1564, when the building opened as a convent in the heart of Florence. The palazzo now holds just 14 suites, shaped by Florentine designer James Cavagnari with local artisans and materials, so the original inner courtyard and mercantile-court structure remain intact rather than carved up for volume. That scarcity is what separates it from the larger luxury addresses nearby: no corridor of identical doors, no banquet-hall breakfast room, just fourteen rooms, the James Restaurant, and the 1564 Lounge Bar, pouring cocktails built on rare spirits and forgotten botanicals from six each evening. Outside, the street stays quiet while Santa Croce, the Bargello, the Duomo's museum, Brunelleschi's dome and the Uffizi all sit within walking distance, and the Sant'Ambrogio Market and Piazza dei Ciompi keep the neighborhood working rather than performing for visitors. Rooms range from a 355-square-foot Deluxe King, with air conditioning, a stocked minibar and a private bathroom, up to a 603-square-foot Standard Master Suite, and the concierge, backed by multi-language staff, handles bookings around the city. Check-in runs from 2pm, checkout by noon, and reception stays staffed around the clock. This suits a couple or a solo traveller who wants Florence without a lobby full of tour groups; it suits families less, since there is no kids' club beyond highchairs, and it does not take pets at all. A cleaning tax is billed separately, and Italian hotels can add a mandatory gala dinner charge worth confirming ahead. Fourteen rooms, one address, no crowd to share it with. A 1564 Florentine palazzo turned into just 14 suites, steps from Santa Croce and the Uffizi, with its own cocktail bar pouring rare-spirit creations nightly. It rewards couples wanting quiet scale over queue-length amenities lists, though families needing a kids' club and pet owners should look elsewhere.
