THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Villa Cora
Villa Cora is a 45-room villa spread across four floors inside its own centuries-old garden in Florence's Oltrarno district, a walk from the Boboli Gardens, Pitti Palace and Ponte Vecchio, close enough to the crowds around them without joining them. Built as a private residence by architect Pietro Camparini in the 19th century, it hosted Princess Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III, and later the French pianist Claude Debussy, before becoming a Grand Hotel in the late 1960s and reopening after renovation in 2010. It joined The Leading Hotels of the World in 2016, and the pedigree shows in a detail no rival can copy: the winter dining room, Sala Moresca, still carries its original frescoes by Antonio Caremmi under a domed Oriental ceiling. In summer, Le Bistrot moves outdoors to the garden beside the pool; Chef Mattia Nesi's menu runs from Tuscan classics at lunch to a refined gastronomic journey at dinner. Rooms range from a 215-square-foot Classic to Junior Suites near 430 square feet and a Standard Suite over 500, the upper categories fitted with air conditioning, minibar and soundproofing. There's a spa with sauna and steam room, a gym, free bicycle rental for exploring beyond the garden walls, and a complimentary shuttle into the centre for anyone who'd rather not walk. Couples marking an occasion and travellers who value pedigree over minimalism will find what they came for; anyone wanting a modern glass-box hotel or a bargain should look elsewhere, especially given a 110 EUR nightly extra-bed charge and a 150 EUR one-way airport transfer. Pets are welcome, for an 80 EUR deposit. Few addresses in Florence can say a princess and a pianist once walked their halls. A 45-room villa inside a centuries-old Florence garden, a walk from the Boboli Gardens, where Princess Eugenie and Claude Debussy once stayed and the Sala Moresca still wears its original 19th-century frescoes. Built for couples and history lovers, not minimalists or bargain hunters.

Perched at the top of the hotel, the Bellevue Roof Terrace lets guests unwind above Florence's rooftops in a suggestive, relaxed atmosphere. It pairs with the Santa Garden Cocktail Club poolside below, where signature cocktails are served amid the hotel's centuries-old park, offering a change of scene through the evening.
