THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Relais & Chateaux Stikliai Hotel
Stikliai street shows up on Vilnius maps from the Middle Ages, and in 1547 a glasscutter named Martynas Paleckis opened Lithuania's first glass manufactory right where this hotel now stands. Three friends, Anna, Aleksandras and Romas, started with a small ice-cream cafe here in the 1980s, then a restaurant, then, apartment by apartment, a 41-room hotel spread across four floors of Old Town buildings, its French-style interiors created by designer Anne Toulouse. What sets Stikliai apart from Vilnius's other heritage hotels is its own 2.5-hectare farm in Dubingiai, which supplies the gourmet restaurant's kitchen, open since 1987, with vegetables, fruit and herbs grown specifically for the table, alongside a separate tavern for heartier Lithuanian cooking and a bar that finds its rhythm with live music on Thursdays. Guests can swim in the indoor pool, book a massage or sauna session, or work from the business center and conference hall; a doctor is on call, and pets travel with you for a fee. Rooms carry Egyptian cotton linens, Hilding Anders mattresses and heated bathroom floors, though sizes and views vary by category, so check specifics before booking. This suits someone drawn to a hotel with a real, told history and a kitchen that means it, not someone chasing glass-and-steel modernity or resort-scale facilities. Airport transfer runs 40 EUR each way for the 6-kilometer trip into the Old Town, where Vilnius University and the Presidential Palace are a short walk from the door. Decades on, the naive dream on a shabby street still holds its shape. Stikliai occupies the street where Lithuania's first glass manufactory opened in 1547, its 41 rooms and gourmet kitchen supplied by the hotel's own farm in Dubingiai. It suits those who want real history behind French-style interiors, not resort-scale facilities, and welcomes pets and business meetings alike, for a fee.

Rooms at Stikliai, styled in French fashion by designer Anne Toulouse, pair heated bathroom floors and Sothys bath amenities with Egyptian cotton linens and 550-gram towels. Individual air conditioning and Hilding Anders mattresses round out rooms that vary in size and outlook, from the inner courtyard to Gaono Street, each finished with bathrobes and slippers.
