THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Villa Petrusse
At the foot of Luxembourg's Old City, Villa Pétrusse sits inside grounds laid out more than a century ago by landscape designer Edouard André, and rooms look out over that garden and the Pétrusse river below. The building began as a private residence in the late 19th century, and it still reads that way: watercolour reproductions by Luxembourgish painter Sosthène Weis hang in the rooms instead of generic art, and the 22 rooms and suites keep the scale of a family home rather than a hotel block. Chef Kim de Dood runs the restaurant, Le Lys, cooking traditional Luxembourgish dishes with Asian touches that shift with the seasons, reason enough to book a table even if staying elsewhere. What sets this apart from other city-centre villas is that garden itself, a century-old landscaped plot in the middle of a capital where most comparable addresses only manage a courtyard. Pets travel with you here for a fee, wheelchair users can reach the restaurant and public areas via the lift, and staff speak multiple languages, useful given Luxembourg's mixed crowd of officials and travellers. There is no on-site parking, so drivers should expect to pay for a nearby space, and breakfast for children is billed separately. Couples wanting a quiet stay and visitors with business nearby will find real calm here; it is not the choice for anyone chasing nightlife or a bargain rate, since a deposit is charged per guest per night on top of the room. Roman Bridge, Barbara Baths and Karl Marx House are all close enough to walk to before dinner. A 19th-century private residence turned 22-room villa hotel, set in century-old gardens by the Pétrusse river with a seasonal Luxembourgish-Asian restaurant. Good for a quiet stay near Luxembourg's Old City, less so for drivers or anyone after nightlife.
