THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Kendov Dvorec
Kendov Dvorec occupies a restored manor in Spodnja Idrija, a farmhouse whose lineage traces back to 1377 above the Idrijca river valley. There are only 11 rooms, so days move at the house's own slow rhythm rather than a property schedule. This suits travellers who want a country house that still runs a serious kitchen: dishes built from žlikrofi, štruklji and other recipes rediscovered from Idrija grandmothers, matched with Primorska wines chosen by an in-house sommelier, plus apple juice pressed from the garden's own trees for breakfast and honey from the head chef's family hives. It does not suit anyone wanting a resort with a long spa menu, a pool deck or nightlife within walking distance. As a member of Relais & Châteaux, the house has committed to that kind of hands-on cooking rather than a chain formula, and it offers something rare among country manors: fly-fishing just a stone's throw from the crystal-clear Idrijca, in a house where the kitchen already grows what it serves. Guests can also hike or cycle through the surrounding hills, borrow bicycles or skis depending on season, or sit with a book from the small library between the picnic area and the barbecue terrace. Rooms come with mini-bars, bathrobes and slippers as standard, some looking over the river or the mountains, and staff switch comfortably between English, German and Italian. Parking and Wi-Fi are free, electric cars can charge on site, and pets are welcome for a 40 euro nightly fee. What lingers after checkout is not a list of amenities but the sense of having stayed somewhere that has done this quietly, and well, for centuries. Kendov Dvorec is an 11-room manor near Idrija where centuries-old recipes, family-kept beehives and Primorska wine share the table, and the Idrijca river sits close enough for a rod before breakfast. It rewards travellers seeking substance over spectacle, not those wanting a spa list or a lively bar scene.

THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Your taste already has an address

The kitchen prepares žlikrofi, štruklji, bakalca and ajmoht according to authentic recipes handed down through generations of local housewives. Chefs source fresh ingredients from nearby producers, so menus change with the seasons, offering guests a genuine taste of Idrija's centuries-old culinary tradition rather than a generic hotel menu.
