THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Wittmore Hotel - Adults Only
Hidden among the alleys of Barcelona's Gothic Quarter, the Wittmore holds 22 rooms across six floors, built around a courtyard that carries the largest vertical garden in the city. It is adults only, which settles quickly who this suits: couples and solo travellers who want quiet after dark, not families weighing a pool schedule against bedtime. Rooms look onto that garden and are flooded with natural light, most with private balconies and a stocked minibar, bathrobe and slippers already in the room. Up on the Sobreático rooftop, chef Alain Guiard's Contraban kitchen serves Mediterranean plates with views across the Gothic Quarter toward the Basilica de la Mercè, and there is a second pool at ground level with a poolside bar for anyone who would rather stay low. What separates the Wittmore from Barcelona's other boutique hotels is that living wall itself, visible from the lounge library, the courtyard below and several of the rooms, not a photograph in the lobby but the actual view. Multilingual staff, fluent in English, Spanish, Italian, German and French, along with a concierge desk, handle transfers, tours and dry cleaning; a gym and a solarium cover the rest. There is no house parking (the nearest public option runs 35 euros a day), and Spain's occasional mandatory gala-dinner fee is worth confirming directly with reception before arrival. None of this suits anyone chasing sprawling grounds, a spa day, or rooms built for children. What stays with you afterwards is not the rooftop or the balcony but that wall of green, still catching light long after the day's plans are done. Twenty-two rooms wrapped around Barcelona's largest vertical garden, hidden in the Gothic Quarter's alleys, adults only. Come for the rooftop Mediterranean menu at Contraban and quiet after dark; skip it if you're travelling with children or need on-site parking.
