THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Santa María Briones
At Santa María Briones, the medieval town wall of Briones is built into the hotel, forming its interior courtyard, part of a 16th-century mansion that architect Ignacio Quemada and designer Isabel López Vilalta restored around the old stone rather than over it. Sixteen rooms are spread across three floors, some looking toward the Ebro river and the defensive wall, others into the heart of the medieval village; the Junior Suite opens onto the vineyards of Rioja Alta and the Sierra de Cantabria, and the Berones Suite has a balcony over Calle Concepción and the church of Santa María. Downstairs, the house's original calado, once used to make and store wine, now holds private dinners and small meetings, and the stone lagar where grapes were once pressed sits as a reserved corner of the restaurant Allegar, which serves Riojan cooking built on tradition rather than reinvention. This is the only hotel in La Rioja to hold a Michelin Key, recognition that sets it apart from the region's many wine hotels trading on views alone. A concierge, 24-hour reception, a library, and a terrace round out the property, along with electric car charging and free Wi-Fi throughout. Guests must be 12 or older, so this suits couples and wine travellers wanting quiet over activity, not families with young children. Self parking costs 30 euros a day, and cash payments are capped at 1000 euros under Spanish regulation. What lingers after checkout is the sense of the wall itself, still standing, still working, centuries after the house was first built around it. Santa María Briones is a 16th-century mansion built into Briones's defensive wall, which still forms its courtyard. It holds the only Michelin Key in La Rioja and welcomes guests from age 12, suiting couples and wine travellers more than families with young children.
