THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Marques de Riscal
Arrive at Elciego and the first thing that breaks the quiet is the roofline: ribbons of titanium and steel by Frank Gehry, lifted above a winery that has pressed grapes since 1858. Marques de Riscal, part of The Luxury Collection, sits inside that same estate, its 61 rooms split across two buildings joined by a raised walkway that guests cross daily between sleep and breakfast. Ten of those rooms are suites, and the largest, the Standard King Suite, still keeps its private bathroom and safe rather than trading function for spectacle. What no comparable luxury hotel holds is this: a room built inside a working winery, where the VIP lounge looks one way to La Rioja and the other to the Basque hills, and where a glass of the house Rioja after the indoor or outdoor pool feels less like a treat than a continuation of the landscape outside. There's a Vinothérapie spa for those who want massages and steam rooms folded into the wine theme, a library and free bicycles for slower afternoons, and a Green Key certification for guests who care where their water and linen come from. This suits a couple marking an anniversary, or anyone who reads a wine label before ordering. It won't suit anyone chasing a beach, a nightlife strip, or a hotel that fills a schedule for them; the point here is the vineyard, not the medieval town below it. What lingers isn't the architecture itself but standing at that walkway at dusk, vines on both sides, and realizing the building is the least strange thing about the view. A Frank Gehry-designed hotel inside a working Rioja winery since 1858, 61 rooms across two buildings joined by a raised walkway. Suits wine lovers and quiet-luxury couples, not beach or nightlife seekers. The VIP lounge view, La Rioja one way, Basque hills the other, is the reason to book.

Marques de Riscal restaurant serves Spanish cuisine within the winery's City of Wine complex, complemented by a second on-site restaurant and 24-hour room service. A wine shop and cafeteria sit nearby, letting guests sample estate vintages. The dining venues stand close to the vineyards that supply the adjoining bodega.
