THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Echaurren
Dinner here means choosing between four kitchens under one roof, and that alone sets Echaurren apart from every other stay in Ezcaray. The hotel occupies a century-old house in the centre of this La Rioja village of barely 2,000 people, close enough to the Colegiata de San Cosme y San Damián to walk there before dark. It carries the Relais & Châteaux mark, but the real weight sits in the kitchen: El Portal de Echaurren was the first restaurant in La Rioja's history to earn a Michelin star, then the first to earn a second. Downstairs, Echaurren Tradición keeps to Marisa Sánchez's inherited recipes, and there is a bistro and a fireside tapas bar besides, so a week here could run entirely on the hotel's own restaurants without repeating a menu. That range asks something of a guest, this suits someone building a trip around a table rather than a spa day, and it will feel like overkill to anyone just passing through for a night's sleep. The 27 rooms are modest in scale, from a 291 square foot Standard to a 667 square foot Deluxe Suite, most fitted with air conditioning, minibar and safe rather than flourish. Outside, there is a garden, a terrace, a solarium and free bicycles, and in winter the ski passes, ski school and ski storage put the slopes within easy reach. Staff work in English, Spanish and French, and pets are welcome for a small daily surcharge. What lingers isn't the room, it's the sense of having eaten somewhere that mattered. Echaurren pairs a century-old Ezcaray house with a kitchen that holds two Michelin stars, plus three more house restaurants, 27 rooms, a garden, ski access and free bicycles. Built for travellers who plan trips around meals, not for a quick overnight stop.
