THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Mas Lazuli
Morning at Mas Lazuli starts with light crossing rows of olive trees and vines outside a stone farmhouse that has stood in Spain's Alt Empordà since the eleventh century, its thick walls now holding seventeen rooms across two floors a few minutes from Cadaqués and Roses. The wellness room keeps a hydromassage tub built for two, a sauna, and a space for facials and body treatments, all reached down the hall from an outdoor pool, sun deck, and garden with outdoor furniture for lingering. The restaurant cooks with local, seasonal ingredients and opens its terrace to the landscape, though it closes on Mondays and Tuesdays, so this isn't a place to plan a spontaneous dinner around. What separates it from the coast's newer boutique openings is the building itself: ten centuries of stone predate the pool and the free Wi-Fi, and the renovation left the original proportions and walls alone instead of smoothing them into something interchangeable. Free bicycles are available for the ride to Cadaqués, Roses, or the Dalí Museum in Figueres, and the concierge will help arrange the rest. Couples wanting a slow few days, cyclists, and anyone content to trade nightlife for quiet and stone walls will settle in fast here. Families chasing a packed activity list, or travellers wanting the constant hum of a bigger hotel, should look elsewhere: seventeen rooms and a restaurant with two closed nights a week aren't built for that kind of pace, and pets aren't allowed either. The people who run it put it simply: stay, and if you can, stretch it one more day. An eleventh-century Alt Empordà farmhouse turned seventeen-room hotel between Cadaqués and Roses, built for stone walls and slow mornings rather than crowds. The wellness room's two-person hydromassage and a restaurant closed two nights a week set the pace. Cyclists and couples fit easily; anyone chasing constant activity won't.

THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Your taste already has an address

Mas Lazuli occupies an eleventh-century masia, a Catalan farmhouse set among vineyards and olive groves in the Alt Empordà countryside. Its original stone walls and solid volumes have been largely preserved through a contemporary renovation designed to accompany, rather than compete with, the historic structure. Over a thousand years of history now form the backdrop of a boutique hotel between Cadaqués and Roses.
