THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Gran Melia Palacio de los Duques
The doors of Gran Melia Palacio de los Duques open off a corner near Plaza de Santo Domingo, in a building that was once a ducal palace and still carries that scale across its six floors and 179 rooms, a short walk from the Royal Palace, the Teatro de la Opera and the Gran Via. What sets it apart from the other palace conversions in this pocket of Madrid is the combination of a rooftop pool and a separate indoor pool, so a swim is not left to the calendar (the outdoor pool runs from May to September only). Guests in a RedLevel suite get their own check-in and check-out, a small thing that matters after a long flight and a longer taxi queue. Room sizes run from a 269-square-foot Premier Double to a 570-square-foot RedLevel suite with its own terrace, and the property also holds family rooms, a bridal suite and rooms with an indoor fireplace, though one of its apartment-style layouts is listed with no published size or photos yet. The kitchen handles halal, kosher, vegan and gluten-free requests without fuss, and the staff cover nine languages, Arabic and Turkish among them, which says something about who already stays here. Extra costs are worth knowing going in: parking nearby runs 35 euros a day, a second breakfast is 42 euros a person, and a travelling dog adds an 80 euro fee plus an 80 euro deposit. This suits someone who wants the old town underfoot without giving up a proper spa and two pools. It will feel wrong to anyone after spare, minimalist rooms or the cheapest bed in the neighbourhood. A former ducal palace off Plaza de Santo Domingo, with 179 rooms, a rooftop pool, an indoor pool and RedLevel suites with private check-in, steps from the Royal Palace. Breakfast, parking and pets cost extra, but it suits travellers wanting history and a proper spa, not minimalists.

A rooftop pool crowns the hotel above its historic gardens, giving guests an elevated spot to swim with views over central Madrid. Reached near the RedLevel private spaces and event areas, the terrace pairs with a 1,000-square-metre garden below, together offering some of the property's most striking indoor-outdoor moments a short walk from Gran Vía.
