THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Seaton House
At Bow Butts Bar, the fire is lit and the window looks out over the grass where Scottish archers once stood in 1418, competing for the Silver Arrow, with West Sands beach stretching beyond. Seaton House is a lovingly restored landmark in the center of St Andrews, one of 42 rooms and suites within a Small Luxury Hotels of the World property, where mornings start with coffee at the window and the walk into town takes minutes. Six suites and three junior suites come with sea or garden views, five with their own private terrace, and a private garden is kept for residents alone. Golfers get the real draw: the Old Course, Ladybank, Crail, Elie, Kingsbarns, Carnoustie and Scotscraig all sit within 25 miles, and the hotel positions itself, without irony, as home to the sport. Ondine Oyster & Grill serves Scottish seafood and oysters at the bar with sea views, while The Board Room keeps things looser with charcuterie and burgers from 11am. What sets Seaton House apart from the golf hotels crowding this coastline is Bow Butts itself, a bar built on six centuries of local history rather than a themed room with clubs on the wall. Couples chasing a long weekend of golf, seafood and a proper Scottish welcome will find little to fault. Families needing a lift, or travelers with pets, should look elsewhere: there are no elevators, no cribs or rollaway beds, and pets aren't permitted. Breakfast runs to about GBP20 per person, on top of the room. LGBTQ+ travelers are explicitly welcomed. It's a small hotel that behaves like it owns the town, because in a sense it does. Seaton House sits at the center of St Andrews, a restored landmark with 42 rooms, Scottish seafood at Ondine Oyster & Grill, and a 1418 archery ground turned into Bow Butts Bar. Golfers get the Old Course and six more within 25 miles; families needing a lift should look elsewhere.
