On the Boulevard de Rochechouart, where the 9th arrondissement gives way to Pigalle and the ground begins its climb toward Montmartre, an eight-storey Art Deco building has stood since 1929, its stone facade and ironwork surviving the neighbourhood's slide from cabaret glamour into red-light reputation and back out the other side. The 106 rooms and suites inside are the work of the Orso Hotels group, reimagined in 2021 by Charlotte de Tonnac and Hugo Sauzay of the Paris studio Festen, two designers trained together at the École Camondo who kept the building's original bones, the cage elevator, the marble staircase spiralling through the lobby, the blue mosaic tiling, in place of anything easier to photograph. The rooms run to moody browns, deep greens, and terracotta, with dark wood headboards, gilded frames, and brass bathroom fixtures that nod to the building's Jazz Age origins without labouring the point; some of the upper floors have private balconies looking straight across to Sacré-Cœur. Food and drink is spread across three separate concepts instead of one flagship: Maggie, a brasserie under chef Emine Jaidene serving share-style French dishes to a room that fills with locals as much as guests; Citrons et Huîtres, a street-level oyster and crudo counter designed by architect Marion Mailaender; and, on the ninth floor, Maggie's Rooftop, a hundred-square-metre terrace planted with fig trees, Chinese almond, and vines, with views that take in the Eiffel Tower and La Défense as well as the Butte. Below street level, Mikado Dancing runs as a basement music bar with live sets and DJs into the small hours. What Rochechouart offers is proximity to a version of Paris that guidebooks tend to flatten into cabaret and sleaze, when the boulevard outside also holds two serious concert halls in La Cigale and Le Trianon, a growing restaurant scene, and the daily traffic of a neighbourhood that has not been entirely handed over to visitors. Staying here means being ten minutes' walk from Sacré-Cœur without paying Montmartre's prices for the privilege, and it means a hotel that is unmistakably sociable: the brasserie and rooftop both draw a Parisian crowd on weekend nights, and a Classique room under the eaves, compact and sloped-ceilinged, can mean hearing that crowd until the rooftop closes. You should not come if you want quiet after ten, a private pool, or a lobby that empties out once the day is done; the ground floor here is built to stay busy, and the basement club keeps its own hours regardless of who's trying to sleep two floors up. You should come for an Art Deco building with its details intact, three good reasons to eat and drink without leaving the premises, and a location that puts you closer to how Parisians actually spend a Friday night than most hotels charging twice as much.
