THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Du Fornet
Hotel Du Fornet sits in the hamlet of Le Fornet, on the road toward the Col de l'Iseran, in a stone and wood building that began life as a family farm in 1887 and became a hotel in 2012. Twelve rooms, no two alike, reuse period furniture and materials from that original structure, so the history feels built into the walls rather than added for effect. Mary and Stéphane run it, which shows in the free evening spread of local charcuterie, cheese and wine served from five to seven, and in their tips on where to ski, eat or walk. In winter the pull is practical: the Fornet cable car is 300 metres away, dropping guests straight into the Val d'Isère-Tignes network and its 300 kilometres of runs, while a free shuttle covers the two kilometres into the village centre from early morning into the small hours. Summer visitors get a quieter version of the same location, with the GR5 and Vanoise National Park trails starting nearby and the Route des Grandes Alpes leading toward the Col itself. After a day out, the wellness area with sauna, steam room and hot tub runs winter afternoons, and massage or fitness coaching can be booked directly. Breakfast is included; the restaurant covers the rest. This suits travellers who want serious skiing access without staying in central Val d'Isère, and who prefer a family-run house to a chain hotel's polish. It won't suit anyone expecting a large resort or bringing a teenager to stay solo, since under-eighteens aren't permitted without an adult. What sets it apart from newer builds nearby is that farmhouse pedigree, still run by the family who converted it. A twelve-room farmhouse from 1887 turned hotel in 2012, 300 metres from the Fornet cable car and the Val d'Isère-Tignes slopes. Family-run by Mary and Stéphane, with an evening charcuterie spread and a small winter wellness area. Not for anyone wanting a large resort or the village centre nightlife.
