THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
La Maison D'Uzes
In the center of Uzès, behind the classical pediment of a private mansion listed as a Historic Monument, mornings begin with coffee at the window overlooking the old town, before a walk to the Jardin Médiéval or the Chartreuse du Val de Bénédiction just outside. This nine-room house has been a Relais & Châteaux member since January 2014, and its restaurant, La Table d'Uzès, has held a Michelin star since February 2014, a rarity for a house this size. Rooms come with bathrobes, minibars, and flat-screen televisions, and the small scale shows elsewhere too: a library and free bicycle rental sit next to a spa with massage and steam room, and an elevator serves the whole building rather than separate wings. Staff work in English and French, pets stay for a small daily fee, and a garage keeps the car off the medieval streets for 21 euros a day. An extra bed runs 40 euros a night, and check-in opens at four in the afternoon, check-out at eleven the next morning, hours built for a slow arrival rather than an early one. Couples marking an occasion, and anyone routing a trip around one meal at a Michelin table, will find the fit obvious. Families needing connecting rooms, or groups larger than a handful, will not, since nine rooms is the entire house. What lingers is not the pediment or the three centuries behind it but the newly added pool, the first quiet addition to a house that, until now, offered only its past for an afternoon spent doing nothing. A nine-room mansion in central Uzès, Relais & Châteaux since 2014, with a Michelin-starred restaurant few peers match. Coffee at the window, a library, free bikes, and a newly added pool round out the quiet. Suits two people planning a trip around one meal, not larger groups needing space.
