THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Santiago de Alfama
The Alfama is the oldest district in Lisbon and the one that survived the catastrophic earthquake of 1755 largely intact, its Moorish street plan of narrow alleys and steep staircases too irregular for the rational Pombaline grid that rebuilt the Baixa below it. It climbs the hillside beneath the Castelo de São Jorge, its buildings leaning toward each other across passages barely wide enough for two people, its tiled facades and drying laundry and sudden viewpoints across the rooftops to the Tagus constituting the visual shorthand for the city that most visitors carry home. The Alfama is also the fado district, and the music is genuinely heard here in the evenings rather than merely performed: from open windows, from bars with no sign outside, from doorways where a singer stops to speak to a neighbour. The Feira da Ladra market runs twice a week. The Lisbon Cathedral, built in the 12th century on the ruins of a mosque, stands a short walk below. The Roman Theatre Museum is adjacent. Miradouro de Santa Luzia, one of the city's finest viewpoints over the rooftops and the river, is immediately below the hotel. Rua de Santiago is one of the most historically significant streets in Lisbon, its name deriving from the church at its head, and its history including a role in the financing of Portuguese exploration, the marriage of Christopher Columbus to Filipa Moniz Perestrelo, whose family connections opened the Atlantic routes, and as the traditional starting point of the Portuguese Caminho de Santiago. The building that now houses the hotel is the 15th-century Palácio dos Castros, which incorporates Roman ruins in its foundations and lived through successive incarnations across five centuries before being rescued from near-archaeological status and restored by architect Luís Rebelo de Andrade in a process that took several years. It opened as a hotel in 2014, family-owned, nineteen rooms and suites, each different, spanning centuries of design references from restored period architectural details and exposed stone to contemporary art and modern furniture, the most humble room generous by Lisbon standards and the Santiago Suite on the fourth floor offering what is claimed, not unreasonably, to be the best view in the city: the full spread of Alfama across to the Tagus and toward the Vasco da Gama bridge. The Michelin Guide calls the restoration one of the most intensive it has encountered, resulting in a hotel unlikely to have looked as splendid at any point in its five-hundred-year existence. The restaurant Audrey's and Manny's Bar handle food and drink with the personality the neighbourhood demands, neither overly formal nor underdressed for the occasion. A beauty bar is on site. The guests are those who came to Lisbon specifically for the Alfama, who understand that the fado and the Moorish streets and the miradouros are the essential Lisbon rather than its backdrop, and who find the combination of a 15th-century palace with Roman foundations, a view over the ancient roofscape and the river, and nineteen rooms entirely sufficient. It draws people who have been to Lisbon and found the lower city too smooth, and who want the part that resists smoothness. The short version: A 19-room family-owned boutique hotel in the 15th-century Palácio dos Castros on Rua de Santiago in the Alfama, a street where Christopher Columbus married and Portuguese exploration was financed. Roman foundations, restored period architecture and contemporary art throughout, the Santiago Suite with what may be the best view in Lisbon across the old rooftops to the Tagus. Immediately above the Miradouro de Santa Luzia, below the Castelo de São Jorge. Fado audible from the street. The Alfama address, for those who came for the oldest part of the city.

Guests can book targeted spa treatments such as a deep tissue massage, described as releasing chronic tension through slow strokes and deep pressure, or a city skin renewal facial. These treatments are offered at the hotel's own Beauty Bar, giving guests a way to unwind after a day exploring Alfama's steep streets.
Guests can indulge at the on-site spa, which offers a curated selection of massages, body treatments, and manicures.
he property includes two distinct dining areas: the Café, Grill, and Bar for relaxed meals and the more formal Audrey's Restaurant.
While in a historic building, accessibility is considered, with lifts and a specially designed Deluxe King Bedroom available for wheelchair users.
The property offers on-site valet parking for a surcharge, which is a highly valued convenience in the densely built Alfama neighborhood.
Pets are not permitted on the property, though service animals are welcomed.
Complimentary items, often including water and soft drinks, are frequently stocked in the in-room minibar.
