THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Vintage Hotel & Spa
Lisbon is the European city that everyone discovers late and immediately wonders why it took so long. It sits on seven hills above the Tagus estuary, its terracotta rooftops and blue azulejo facades catching the Atlantic light in a way that is genuinely unlike anywhere else on the continent, and its combination of Moorish, Mannerist and Art Nouveau architecture compressed into a navigable old city has been drawing visitors in increasing numbers since the city rediscovered itself following decades of post-dictatorship quietude. The food is serious, the wine exceptional and inexpensive, the fThe Avenida da Liberdade is Lisbon's grand boulevard, a wide tree-lined promenade running north from the Baixa toward the Marquês de Pombal roundabout, flanked by luxury boutiques and pavement cafés, and immediately to its west sits the Príncipe Real neighbourhood, Lisbon's most quietly elegant district, a grid of 19th-century mansions and intimate squares with an antiques market on Sundays and the kind of independent shops and restaurants that indicate a neighbourhood that locals have claimed and held. The Vintage Hotel & Spa sits on Rua Rodrigo da Fonseca, a quiet backstreet at the junction of the Avenida da Liberdade and Príncipe Real, about as well-positioned as a Lisbon address can be: the Botanic Garden is steps away, the Bairro Alto is a short walk downhill, the Chiado and its bookshops and galleries are fifteen minutes on foot. The building's exterior is a classic Lisbon 20th-century facade, restrained and white, giving no indication of the interior, which is a precisely considered mid-century den of dark wengue wood, terracotta walls, bespoke vintage furniture and a portrait of a Fadista by Lisboan artist Margarida Fleming that sets the tone for the whole operation. Vintage cocktail trolleys in the corridors, stocked with complimentary ingredients for guests to assemble their own gin and tonics, are one of the more charming room amenities in Lisbon. The rooms themselves blend retro one-off furniture pieces with contemporary restraint, corner rooms with curved walls and French windows over the quiet street below being the ones to request. The subterranean spa, with a heated indoor pool, sauna, hammam and treatment rooms using La Sultane de Saba and Portuguese Claus Porto products, is one of the better hotel spa propositions in the city. The rooftop bar opens in the warmer months with panoramic views over the Lisbon roofscape and a programme of live music and outdoor cinema. The Blue Bistrot serves contemporary Portuguese cooking at street level, drawing neighbourhood regulars alongside hotel guests. The guests are design-literate, culturally curious, and typically in Lisbon for long enough to want a hotel with a genuine neighbourhood character rather than a grand address. They tend to be in their thirties and forties, well-travelled enough to know that Príncipe Real is the correct part of Lisbon to be in, and will spend their mornings in the Botanic Garden or the antiques market and their evenings in the natural wine bars of the Bairro Alto a few streets below. The short version: A mid-century boutique hotel on a quiet backstreet at the junction of Avenida da Liberdade and Príncipe Real, Lisbon's most elegantly residential neighbourhood. Dark wengue wood, terracotta walls, vintage cocktail trolleys stocked for complimentary G&Ts, a subterranean spa with indoor pool, a rooftop bar with city views, and a Portuguese restaurant that draws the neighbourhood as reliably as guests. The design-forward, neighbourhood-embedded Lisbon address.
