THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Beaverbrook
Beaverbrook occupies 470 acres of the Surrey Hills, built around a late-Victorian mansion once owned by Lord Beaverbrook, the press baron who ran Britain's wartime aircraft production from these grounds and still lends the estate its Spitfire emblem. That history runs alongside a spa in The Coach House, where stained-glass ceilings designed by Brian Clark scatter colour over the pool and treatment rooms, and alongside an estate that functions less like a single hotel and more like a small village: The House, The Garden House, The Coach House and The Village each hold their own character, linked by grounds, a tennis court, a library and a picnic area. Families get a genuine offer here, not a token one: a playroom, a children's pool, a playground, interconnecting rooms and cots on request. Couples booking one of the cottages, at 140 square feet with its own terrace and private bathroom, get a quieter corner of the same estate. Business groups can take the Maxwell or Aitken rooms, wood-panelled and hung with photographs from the Saucepans for Spitfires campaign. Breakfast is cooked to order but costs extra, around GBP 25 a head, and pets are welcome only in designated rooms, so check before booking with a dog in tow. What no comparable Surrey property offers is this exact overlap of Spitfire-production history and a spa built inside a working coach house, both folded into one estate. Anyone wanting a single, self-contained boutique building should look elsewhere; anyone happy to walk between houses to reach dinner or the pool will find the estate rewards the wandering. Beaverbrook is a 470-acre Surrey Hills estate built around Lord Beaverbrook's Victorian mansion, split into four houses with a stained-glass spa and a proper kids' club. Cooked breakfast costs extra and pets need a specific room. Best for those happy to roam grounds, not one compact building.
