THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Middleton Lodge
Middleton Lodge sits on two hundred acres of Yorkshire parkland near Richmond, built in 1780 by John Carr and shaped since as a private house, a working farm, and now an estate hotel the Allison family have restored building by building since 1980. Rooms are scattered through the Coach House, the old Dairy, the Orchard, and the Georgian Main House itself, with cottages kept for longer stays; the Head Gardener's Cottage is the only one with its own door into the garden, and a handful of others come with outdoor hot tubs or the log burning stove in the Tack Room. What sets it apart is Forge, the estate's own restaurant, which holds both a Michelin star and a Green Star and serves dinner from Thursday to Sunday plus Saturday lunch, built around what the kitchen gardens and surrounding land produce that week. The more relaxed Coach House runs daily with its own Mediterranean-leaning menu drawn from the same walled gardens. At the Forest Spa, a heated outdoor pool kept near thirty degrees sits inside the treeline, numbers deliberately capped so the place never feels crowded, and treatments need booking ahead directly with the estate. This suits travellers happy to disappear into a working estate for a few days, eat seriously, and stop checking the time; anyone wanting nightlife or a city center within walking distance should look elsewhere, since the nearest one sits twenty kilometres away. Middleton Lodge was named seventh in the UK's Top 50 Boutique Hotels, and it earns that ranking quietly, one restored outbuilding at a time. A 1780 Georgian estate near Richmond, rebuilt room by room since 1980, with a Michelin-starred restaurant and a capped-capacity spa pool in the trees. It rewards travellers happy to slow down for a few days, not those wanting a city on the doorstep.
