THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Almhof Schneider
A garage hides under Almhof Schneider that most guests never mention to friends back home: designed by Japanese designer Shinichiro Ogata around a concept of moon and forest, it sets the tone before anyone has even reached the lobby. The hotel sits in Lech am Arlberg, Austria, a 5-star, 50-room property the Schneider family has run since 1929, and one that Guide Michelin 2024 called a family jewel rather than just another alpine address. Skiing here is literal, not aspirational: guests ski in and out directly, ski passes and gear sort themselves out on site, and guides take the more ambitious off-piste or by helicopter to peaks like the Mehlsack and Schneetäli. Those who prefer flat ground can cover 27 kilometres of prepared cross-country trails at no cost. Inside, the pace slows. A library stacked with a classical vinyl collection doubles as a meeting room, and a ground-floor cinema seats groups of three across seven sofas. There is a spa with sauna, steam bath, solarium and massage room, a pool, and a yoga area for those working off the strudel. Families are genuinely catered for, with a supervised playroom, a children's own table in the library, and a teen room stocked with table tennis, foosball and a PlayStation, though solo travellers under 18 won't get past the door. Staff switch comfortably between English, Spanish, Italian, German and French. Check-in runs from 5pm, check-out by 1pm. This suits people who want their luxury layered with history rather than assembled last season, and less so anyone chasing anonymous glass-box modernism. Ninety-seven years under one family, a garage by a Japanese design master, and 27 kilometres of free cross-country trails: Almhof Schneider treats Lech am Arlberg like home, not a postcard.
