THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Das Tyrol Vienna
Walk through the sliding glass door on Mariahilfer Straße and the first thing you see is porcelain leaves in white and gold, hundreds of them, strung on glass pearls and catching the light from a Lladró chandelier. That entrance sets the tone for Das Tyrol, a 30-room hotel in a time-honoured building between Vienna's old town and the Museumsquartier, a few minutes from the Naschmarkt and steps off the city's longest shopping street, Mariahilfer Straße. What sets it apart is the art: roughly a hundred pieces from owner Helena Ramsbacher's private collection are scattered through the lobby, the bar, the spa and every room, with a different original hanging above each bed, so no two nights here look alike. Rooms run small by design, from an 18 square metre compact double to a 30 square metre studio overlooking the traffic-calmed street below, each with marble bathrooms, a Nespresso machine and a tablet loaded with the hotel's own recommendations. Downstairs there's a private spa with sauna, steam room and massage, and a lounge that doubles as an informal living room. The breakfast is one the house considers among the best in the city, with gluten-free and vegetarian options. This suits a couple or a solo traveller who wants a short walk to the sights and a room that feels considered rather than assembled from a catalogue. It will frustrate anyone who needs real square footage or wants to bring a pet, since neither is on offer here. Extra beds cost 80 euros a night and early arrivals or late departures 169. What lingers isn't the gold leaf. It's the sense that someone actually chose everything in the room you're standing in. Das Tyrol packs a hundred contemporary artworks, a private spa and one of Vienna's better breakfasts into 30 rooms behind the Museumsquartier. It suits couples and solo travellers who want a considered room within walking distance of the old town, not families needing space or pet owners.
