On Petersplatz, one of the oldest squares in Vienna's Innere Stadt, across from the dome of Peterskirche and a few streets from St. Stephen's Cathedral, Rosewood Vienna occupies a neoclassical building designed in 1835 by the architect Alois Pichl, built as the headquarters of the Erste österreichische Spar-Casse, the city's first savings bank. The building held that role for well over a century before Rosewood Hotel Group took possession and opened it as a hotel in August 2022; the conversion was carried out by two Vienna firms, A2K and BEHF, who fit 99 rooms and suites into the old banking hall and its upper floors: 71 guestrooms and 28 suites, three of them signature. It is Rosewood's first property in Austria, and the scale of the original building, built to hold a nation's savings rather than its guests, still sets the terms of the place: high ceilings, deep window bays, a sense of institutional confidence that predates the hospitality by 187 years. Interiors are by the London studio Alexander Waterworth, who threaded contemporary furniture through the original stucco and cornicing rather than stripping it back, with textiles drawn from the 1850 to 1910 archive of the Viennese house Backhausen and art selected by the Paris consultancy Atelier 27. Dining runs through Neue Hoheit, the sixth-floor brasserie under executive chef Matthias Mezera, who returned to his native Vienna after training at the Adlon Kempinski in Berlin, serving Austrian and European dishes off a Josper grill alongside a raw bar; a floor above, the rooftop bar, designed by the Vienna studio Kroenland as a speakeasy in miniature, works through a short list of Austrian-spirit cocktails against a 360-degree view of the Old Town roofline. Asaya Spa occupies the fifth and sixth floors, two treatment rooms only, with Augustinus Bader products and a sauna and steam room rather than anything larger. What it feels like is a bank that has decided to be generous: formal bones, warm service, a location so central that the Graben and Kohlmarkt are a two-minute walk and St. Stephen's is visible from several of the upper rooms. It suits travellers who want Vienna's imperial fabric without a museum's hush around it, people who will use the rooftop bar on a Tuesday as readily as a Saturday, and anyone for whom a five-minute walk to the Albertina or the Hofburg matters more than square footage. The patterned Backhausen textiles and Art Deco lighting give the rooms more personality than most new-build luxury hotels attempt, which some will read as characterful and others as slightly busy for a space this formal. You should not come if you want the pared-back, gallery-white minimalism that now defines a lot of new European luxury, or if a quiet courtyard view matters more to you than being on top of the action, since the Petersplatz-facing rooms hear the square. You should come for the address itself, for a building with a genuine institutional past rather than a manufactured one, and for a kitchen and bar programme, under a chef and designers native to the city, that reads as Viennese rather than generically international.
