Kinsterna Hotel
Seven kilometres from the medieval citadel of Monemvasia, on the southeastern tip of the Peloponnese, Kinsterna has been one of Greece's best-kept secrets since it opened in 2010. The hotel occupies a Byzantine estate set among 25 acres of private vineyards, olive groves, and citrus trees overlooking the Aegean, and it has been doing this quietly and exceptionally well without needing the Greek islands' more photogenic addresses to notice. The estate dates to the Ottoman and Venetian eras, was restored with rigorous care by its local owners, and operates today on a philosophy of self-sufficiency that feels genuine rather than performed: the hotel produces its own wine from native Greek varietals, its own extra virgin olive oil, tsipouro, bread baked in the old stone oven, soap, and marmalade, with around 60 percent of the kitchen's ingredients coming directly from the estate. Fifty-one rooms and suites in the restored mansion, stone walls naturally soundproofed by eight centuries of construction, stone fireplaces, atmospheric balconies, timber beams, and the kind of quiet that only comes from a building that has always been serious. The gourmet restaurant is cantilevered over the ancient cistern at the heart of the estate, lit by candlelight at dinner with the rock of Monemvasia visible across the Aegean, the menu built around what the gardens and the morning's fishing have produced. A spring-fed infinity pool winds through the estate like a river among olive trees. The spa offers hammam, whirlpool, and treatments using the estate's own olive oil and honey. Monemvasia itself, one of the most extraordinary medieval citadels in Europe, is ten minutes by car. Short version: A Byzantine estate turned boutique hotel on the Peloponnese coast, producing its own wine, olive oil, bread, and soap from 25 acres of private grounds, with 51 rooms, a candlelit restaurant cantilevered over an ancient cistern, a spring-fed infinity pool, and the medieval citadel of Monemvasia ten minutes away.

The hotel sits within a 25-acre estate southwest of Monemvasia planted with olive trees, citrus groves and vineyards, including an orange grove whose trees date to the early nineteenth century. Century-old eucalyptus and cypress trees frame the grounds, which also supply produce used in the estate's own wine, olive oil and kitchen gardens.
