THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Kruisherenhotel
The Kruisherenhotel occupies a 15th-century monastery and its adjoining Gothic church in the heart of Maastricht's historic centre, the vaulted stone shell reworked by designer Henk Vos into 60 rooms spread across three distinct sections: the original cloister, the gatehouse called the Poortwachterswoning, and the contemporary Casa Nova wing. Furniture by Le Corbusier, Ingo Maurer and Philippe Starck sits inside centuries-old walls, which is the kind of contrast few boutique hotels in the Netherlands can offer, since most work with new-build shells rather than a former church nave. Rooms differ by size and character rather than a repeated template, running from a 237-square-foot Superior up to a 377-square-foot Junior Suite, all with espresso machines, flat-screen televisions and toiletries. Downstairs, Spencer's Restaurant serves regional cuisine, with a bar and terrace overlooking the garden. Maastricht University, Sint Servaasbasiliek and the Vrijthof square are all under a kilometre away, close enough to walk without needing the bicycle rental at the door. Travelers chasing a purely modern glass-and-steel look should book elsewhere, and with buffet breakfast charged at 27 euros a person and valet parking at 35 euros a day, this isn't a stay for a tight budget either. Anyone drawn to sleeping inside a piece of Gothic architecture, with a library on site, without giving up a proper minibar and room service, will find little to match it in this city. The hotel is currently closed for renovation and is scheduled to reopen in October 2026, so anyone booking now is booking a stay in a building mid-transformation, not the one shown in photos taken before it closed. A 15th-century monastery and Gothic church turned into a 60-room design hotel in central Maastricht, with furniture by Le Corbusier and Starck inside centuries-old walls. Closed for renovation, it reopens in October 2026. Book it for the architecture, not for glass-and-steel modernity.
