Villa Ruimzicht
Villa Ruimzicht sits under trees older than the province's road signs, an arboretum wrapped around a monumental country house five minutes' walk from Doetinchem's center and five from the forest. Guests arrive by bike as often as by car, following the Achterhoek's network of cycling routes past castles and Hanzestad towns before turning up the drive to charge an electric car or lock a rented bike by the terrace. What sets this 42-room villa apart from other converted country houses in the region is chef Bjorn Massop's Restaurant Lokaal, built on regional produce the kitchen says could arrive by bike rather than flown in, plus a second, more casual Bar & Bites for guests who want food without ceremony. The building runs on a single level, no floors to climb, which makes it genuinely workable for wheelchair users rather than accessible in name only. Rooms stay plain and functional, from a 269-square-foot standard double to a 323-square-foot king with air conditioning, so anyone chasing designer flourishes should look elsewhere; this is a place for people who want a good garden, a good kitchen, and quiet after dinner. The conference hall and meeting rooms mean it doubles as a business address during the week, so weekend romantics sharing the bridal suite might find the lobby full of laptops. Families get their own room category and a picnic area on the grounds; pets stay home, no exceptions. Extra beds run 35 euros a night, early arrival or a late 11am departure costs 20 more. What lingers is the arboretum once the day visitors to the mosque and Landscape Park have moved on, when the terrace empties and the old trees take over. A single-level, wheelchair-accessible villa in the Achterhoek countryside, five minutes from Doetinchem's center, where chef Bjorn Massop's Restaurant Lokaal sources locally rather than by truck. Cyclists and business groups share the 42 rooms; day-trippers to the mosque or Landscape Park won't find much reason to linger.
