THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Dowans Hotel
The Spey slides past the gardens at Dowans Hotel in Aberlour, and a woodland path through Linn Falls leads straight to GlenAllachie distillery. That proximity is the point: this is a seventeen-room, family-run house built for people who came to Speyside for the whisky trail and the river, not for a big-brand lobby. The Still, the hotel's own whisky bar, stocks a curated run of Speyside drams, including GlenAllachie's smoky Meikle Tòir series, and the team runs flights and pairings for guests who want to taste sherried and peated expressions side by side, something few hotels this size bother to do properly. Rooms are warmly decorated rather than fashionable, with a television and a DVD player, and they do the job after a day on the Speyside Way, where herons and otters work the river for salmon. Because there is no 24-hour front desk, guests arriving after nine in the evening need to let the hotel know their expected arrival time in advance. The restaurant serves local cuisine, in a village that calls itself the larder of Scotland, known for Aberdeen Angus cattle, Spey salmon, and the barley that goes into the malt whisky, with Walker's Shortbread bakery and Aberlour Distillery both close by. None of this suits anyone chasing a 24-hour reception, room service at midnight, or anonymity. It suits people happy to be greeted by name, who want a dram explained rather than poured, and who would rather walk to a distillery than book a taxi to one. The village even coded its own tartan for the deal: blue for the river, gold for the barley, purple for the heather that edges it all. A seventeen-room, family-run house on the Speyside whisky trail, walking distance from GlenAllachie distillery and built around its own whisky bar, The Still. It suits guests who want a dram explained rather than poured, not those chasing a 24-hour desk or anonymity.

THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Your taste already has an address

The hotel's restaurant, '57', serves a menu built around Scottish produce, overseen by head chef Scott Morton, who previously cooked at the Craigellachie Hotel and the Highlander Inn. His approach ranges from simple, flavour-led dishes to more refined plates, drawing on Speyside's larder of salmon, Aberdeen Angus beef and local game.
