Le Meurice occupies 228 rue de Rivoli, under the arcades that face the Tuileries Garden, on a site the hotel has held since 1835, when Charles-Augustin Meurice, a postmaster who had already built a following ferrying British travellers from Calais, moved his operation here from its original address on rue Saint-Honoré. The building was substantially rebuilt between 1905 and 1907 under Arthur Millon and the Swiss hotelier Frédéric Schwenter, with the architect Henri Paul Nénot overseeing a reconstruction that gave every room its own bathroom, a claim to being the first hotel in Paris to do so, and the Golden Keys concierge association was founded at the property in 1929. It received France's Palace distinction in 2011 and three Michelin Keys in 2024, has 121 rooms and 39 suites across seven floors, and has belonged to the Dorchester Collection since 2000. Pascal Billard took over as general manager in August 2025, succeeding Franka Holtmann after more than eighteen years in the role. The public rooms carry the eighteenth century in gilt and boiserie, but Philippe Starck reworked much of the interior in 2007 and returned in 2016 with his daughter Ara Starck to revise the restaurants and bars, so the corridors, teal and lantern-lit with hand-painted Grecian frescoes, sit against suites decorated by Lally & Berger in a calmer Louis XVI register. Restaurant le Meurice Alain Ducasse holds two Michelin stars under executive chef Amaury Bouhours, and Cédric Grolet, the pastry chef, runs a patisserie off the lobby that draws its own queue independent of the hotel's guests. The Dalí Suite on the top floor takes its name and its excess, gilded ceiling roses, a private terrace ringed with topiary, from the decades Salvador Dalí spent there every year, arriving with animals and painting the walls with the management's blessing. Staying here is closer to residing in a well-run institution than checking into a hotel, the staff turnover is low and the regulars are recognised, which means the service has a memory that newer palaces cannot manufacture. It suits a guest who wants Paris handled quietly, who would rather have a concierge who remembers their allergies than a lobby full of new furniture, and who finds real satisfaction in eating a croissant made by a chef with two Michelin stars to his name before doing anything else that day. It does not suit anyone chasing the newest opening in the eighth arrondissement, the mood here is settled rather than current, built on a clientele that returns rather than one discovering it for the first time. You should not come if you want a hotel that feels of this decade, the Starck interventions modernised without erasing the sense that you are staying somewhere that predates the Ritz. You should come for a location that puts the Louvre, the Tuileries and Place Vendôme within an unhurried walk, and for the particular comfort of being looked after by people who have been doing this for a very long time.
