THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Kristiania
Above the village of Lech, in Austria's Lechtal Alps, Kristiania sits a little apart from the ski lifts and crowds below, close enough to Hinterwieslift and the Rufikopfbahn gondola for first tracks, far enough to keep its own quiet rhythm. The house was built by Othmar Schneider, who won Austria's first Olympic gold in alpine skiing at the 1952 Oslo games, a city once called Kristiania; his trophies still hang on the walls, and his daughter Gertrud now runs the place as host, collector and custodian of its particular tone. With only 29 rooms, no two alike, this is a stay shaped by one family's taste rather than a brand playbook: art in the corridors, a library for slow afternoons, a private spa suite with sauna and jacuzzi, and a Kaminzimmer where fondue and a good red take the evening wherever it wants to go. Dinner at the main restaurant, overseen by Belgian-born chef Jurgen Dirkx, leans on Alpine ingredients with French precision, while the bar is built for a Negroni that turns into two. Skiers get ski-to-door access, a ski school and rental on site; guests travelling with a dog are welcomed rather than tolerated. Families take the multi-room suites, some over a thousand square feet; solo travellers and couples have the simpler guest rooms, which were never designed as an afterthought. This is not the place for anyone chasing a scene, a spa menu the length of a book, or the louder end of Alpine luxury. What it has that its larger neighbours mostly do not is a family still living in the house they built, and a sense that someone here has actually thought about you. Kristiania is a 29-room house above Lech, built by an Olympic ski champion and still run by his daughter, where fondue nights and a private spa matter more than label luxury. It suits travellers who want character over spectacle, not those after a big-resort scene.

THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Your taste already has an address

Every house worth staying in should have a bar worth stepping into, and Kristiania's is built for aperitifs, late-night conversation and classic cocktails, from a Negroni to something stirred the old-fashioned way. Low lights and proper atmosphere make the case for one more drink before the evening ends.
