THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Melenos Lindos Hotel
Twelve suites climb the rocky flank of Lindos off a single central stairway, their white-washed and sandstone walls branching away like alleys in the village above, so that moving between breakfast, private terrace and rooftop restaurant feels less like checking into a hotel and more like being handed a key to a corner of Lindos itself. Every stone facade, ceiling and mirror frame here was made rather than bought: artist-designer Donald H. Green spent months studying the masonry and carpentry of the town's 17th-century mansions, then brought in the last local Lindian craftsmen to hand-carve sandstone and cedar, commissioned a Turkish studio for the Iznik-style ceramic panels in the bathrooms and terrace fountains, and sent wrought-iron fittings and mother-of-pearl mirror frames to workshops in Turkey and Morocco. That level of built provenance is the one thing peers on this coast do not have. Private terraces, paved in pebble mosaics and shaded by bougainvillea, frangipani, lavender and jasmine, look straight over the Aegean, with the Acropolis two minutes' walk away. This suits travellers wanting a wedding or honeymoon with real history in the stonework, not those chasing a large resort's amenities list, since Melenos Lindos Hotel runs to twelve suites, a rooftop restaurant and a cocktail bar. Villa Venetoklis, sleeping up to eleven, adds a washing machine for longer stays; Villa Melenos, sleeping up to four, keeps to orthosomatic COCO-MAT mattresses, deck chairs on the terrace and a safe box. The "Fouli" gift shop, named for jasmine, sells the same kind of pieces that furnish the rooms, sourced from Greece, Turkey, Italy and Syria. Few hotels this small carry this much history in their walls. Twelve suites built into the rock at Lindos, with hand-carved stonework, cedar carpentry and Iznik-style ceramics made by craftsmen from Rhodes, Turkey and Morocco for Melenos Lindos Hotel. Good for a wedding or honeymoon with real history in the walls, less so for anyone wanting a big resort's amenities list.
