This 16th-century palazzo belonged to the Torlonia family, one of Rome's most prominent noble houses, before it opened as a hotel in 1845. The English poets gave it its name. Keats, Byron, and Shelley stayed here during the Grand Tour, along with enough English aristocrats that the hotel became known as the English destination in Rome. The location is what makes it work. Via Borgognona puts you steps from the Spanish Steps and the entire Condotti shopping district. Trevi Fountain is a 10-minute walk. Villa Borghese and the Roman Forum are both within reach without needing transport. The recent renovation respected the palazzo's history rather than fighting it. Each of the 79 rooms is designed individually with restored stucco, custom Rubelli fabrics, handcrafted lamps, and marble bathrooms. Crystal chandeliers, antique furniture, period details that don't feel staged. Upper floor rooms and the terrace have views over Rome's rooftops to Villa Medici, the Vittoriano, and San Carlo. Café Romano handles all-day dining with Italian and Mediterranean dishes that have been modernized without losing their foundation. The kitchen does its job well enough, the outdoor seating on Via Borgognona earns its place for breakfast or aperitivo, while the lounge bar makes a solid Martini, and the barman Andrea knows what he's doing. The concierge, Massimo Mazzola, is the real asset here. He knows Rome beyond the obvious tourist circuit, which matters when you're trying to navigate the city properly. The hotel has the atmosphere of a private residence that happens to accept guests, which makes sense given its history. Staff are attentive without hovering. It's formal but not stuffy, elegant without announcing itself. This is Grand Tour hospitality updated for now. The building carries its centuries well, and the location gives you Rome's best streets right outside the door.
