Opera composer Gaetano Donizetti lived in this 19th-century palazzo before the building was converted into a 30-room boutique hotel. Maalot Roma opened as part of The First Hotels collection, a group positioning itself as Rome's answer to predictable luxury hospitality. The approach is young, irreverent, deliberately not whispered. Entry is through Don Pasquale restaurant, named after Donizetti's most famous opera. The restaurant occupies a glass-domed winter garden that functions as the hotel's central gathering space. Eclectic Art Deco interiors, vibrant fabrics in clashing patterns, velvet sofas, contemporary art with a recurring hat theme (a nod to "Wherever I Lay My Hat, That's My Home"). A portrait of Marilyn Monroe in 18th-century dress hangs in the ground-floor lounge. Marie Antoinette brandishes an ice cream cone in the bar. Each of the 30 rooms is individually designed with bespoke Italian furnishings, bold color schemes, and Calacatta Arabescato marble bathrooms. The One-Bedroom Suite has the only bathtub in the hotel, done in navy and chartreuse with a fireplace and separate sitting room. The two penthouse suites include the Terrace Suite with outdoor space. Don Pasquale serves modern Roman cuisine under Executive Chef Domenico Boschi, earning recognition from Gambero Rosso and other Italian food guides. The glass ceiling floods the space with natural light. The adjoining bar specializes in rum with focused tastings of unusual selections, though Italian wines and house-made infusions also feature heavily. Aperitivo on the outdoor patio draws locals and guests. Round-the-clock room service handles late-night pasta cravings. The basement gym is unexpectedly well-equipped for a boutique hotel this size, with Technogym machines, ebonized wood, and mirrored walls. Yoga and Pilates classes available, personal trainers on request. Location is the real advantage. One hundred meters from Trevi Fountain, walking distance to the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Spanish Steps, Colosseum, Villa Borghese. Via del Corso shopping is immediate. The street is pedestrianized, so taxis drop at the corner and bell staff meet you with luggage assistance. The hotel brands itself as rock and roll hospitality, which translates to vibrant design choices and service that doesn't take itself too seriously while still executing properly. This works better than it sounds. Maalot Roma feels like staying in an artistic friend's well-appointed home instead of checking into a traditional luxury property.
